How to Find a Good Drywall Company

Drywall is the material of choice for most home wall systems. Compared to other wall treatments drywall is inexpensive and easy to install when you have an experienced drywall contractor doing the job. Most homeowners can easily repair small dents and dings in drywall but once the damage is larger than a two-inches in diameter, you should consider hiring a professional drywall contractor.

How to Locate a Reputable Drywall Contractor

Talk with your friends, family and co-workers to see if they have hired a drywall contractor they were happy with and how the project was handled. Ask if you can see the repair or installation. Another way to find a local drywall contractor is by using a local search on the Internet. Simply type in drywall contractor and your zip code and you will get a list of drywall companies in your area. Visit the contractor’s website and look at pictures of completed projects. Read their “About Us” page to find how long they have been in business.

Interview the Drywall Contractor

Make appointments with at least three different drywall contractors. Ask them for a list of references, if they are licensed bonded and insured and if they will provide proof of liability and work comp insurance. Also, find out what’s the earliest date available for scheduling. If a contractor is hesitant to provide any of this information or they have a backlog on scheduling you might want to continue looking.

Research the Drywall Contractor

When you’re looking at the drywall contractor’s website, find out if they are a member of the Better Business Bureau (BBB). If they are members, check out the contractors rating and history of handling complaints. Complaints are fairly usual in construction, what you want to find out is if the complaints were satisfactorily handled and how many complaints have been filed. You can also call your local BBB and get this information over the phone.

Check to see if the drywall contractor is licensed, bonded and insured and if any complaints have been filed against the drywall contractor’s license. Not every state requires all contractors to be licensed. You can find this information online by going to your state’s website or search “contractor license” and your state abbreviation.

Contact the people on the contractor’s reference list and ask them the following questions:

  • Was the job well handled and did it come in on budget?
  • If the job was over budget, was it justified?
  • Were there any problems and if so, how were they handled?
  • Was there a designated point of contact for the project?
  • Would you hire the drywall contractor again?

Request a Written Estimate from the Drywall Contractor

There are specific items you want included in an estimate to make sure you get the real cost of the project. Make sure you ask the contractor for:

  • A written estimate
  • An estimate that is all inclusive including disposal fees, container rental and other charges
  • A detailed list of materials and a detailed description of the work to be done
  • Start and ending dates
  • A firm price
  • Warranty or guarantee information
